Michael Douglas has dropped a surprisingly juicy Kobe Bryant anecdote in his new memoir, One Helluva Ride. Douglas says that when he and Catherine Zeta-Jones first began dating in 1998, they were trying to make a long-distance relationship work. He was based in New York while Catherine lived in Los Angeles, apparently just below Kobe Bryant’s home in the Pacific Palisades.
According to Douglas, that proximity became interesting.
“Apparently Kobe kept finding excuses to stop by Catherine’s house,” Douglas writes, joking that he was not sure how many times Kobe had supposedly “lost his dog,” but “it was a lot.”
Hola!
At the time, Catherine was 29 and fresh off The Mask of Zorro, while Kobe was only around 20 or 21 and already one of the NBA’s biggest young stars. He had not yet met Vanessa Laine, whom he would later marry in 2001. Douglas and Catherine became engaged on New Year’s Eve 1999.
Michael Is Spilling Everything
The obvious question is: what exactly was happening during all those dog-related visits? Douglas does not say that Catherine and Kobe had a romantic or sexual relationship, and nothing in the anecdote proves that they did. It may genuinely have been nothing more than a very young Kobe finding increasingly flimsy excuses to visit one of the most beautiful and famous actresses in Hollywood.
And honestly, late-’90s Catherine Zeta-Jones? I understand the persistence. What makes the story funnier is that Catherine herself has previously acknowledged Kobe as her former neighbour. After his death in 2020, she remembered meeting him through his dog, which gives Douglas’ story at least some independent context.

One Helluva Ride has already produced stories about his past affairs, including his relationship with Kathleen Turner, along with intimate details from his marriages and Hollywood career. Douglas says he contacted the women he discusses in the book and received permission before including their stories.
Douglas himself has also faced controversy in the past. In 1998, a Black caddie accused him of racist remarks and mistreatment during a golf outing, claims that Douglas’s side disputed.
That makes the Kobe anecdote feel less like some grand revelation and more like exactly what a celebrity memoir needs: an unexpected name, a funny story and just enough ambiguity to make everyone start talking.
Personally, I would resist turning it into proof that Kobe and Catherine were secretly hooking up. Douglas did not say that. But the image of a 20-year-old Kobe Bryant repeatedly appearing at Catherine Zeta-Jones’ door because his dog had mysteriously escaped yet again? Please. That is gossip bait. And Michael clearly knew exactly what he was doing when he put it in the book.
