Isaiah Washington has revealed that his wife, Jenisa Garland, died more than a year ago. The former Grey’s Anatomy actor kept the loss private for 16 months. Jenisa collapsed suddenly on May 31, 2025. She died nine days later, on June 9, after suffering what Isaiah described as a massive hemorrhagic stroke. They had been married for 29 years.
People reports that Washington announced the death in an October 3 Instagram post, explaining that Jenisa never recovered after the stroke. He said the loss came as an enormous shock to him and their three children and acknowledged that his intensely private wife probably would not have wanted him discussing her death publicly.

This is terribly sad, and also a reminder of how little we really know about famous people’s private lives. Isaiah Washington was married to Jenisa Garland for nearly 30 years, yet her death remained outside the celebrity-news cycle for 16 months.
Washington says Jenisa was deeply private, and it appears he respected that even after her death. His decision to speak now seems partly motivated by wanting people to take serious headaches and neurological symptoms seriously. That is understandable, though the useful takeaway is not to panic over every headache. Sudden severe pain, weakness, confusion, speech problems, vision changes or loss of balance can require urgent medical attention.
What stayed with me most was Washington admitting he was not sure Jenisa would have approved of the post. That feels honest. Grief can create difficult questions about privacy, especially when the person who died would have preferred silence.
Washington has had a complicated public career, but that does not make the loss of a spouse any less devastating. Jenisa clearly valued privacy. The respectful thing now is probably to honour it. Condolences to Isaiah and their children.
