Prince Harry’s Invictus Games are heading to South Korea for the 2029 competition, marking the first time the international sporting event for wounded, injured and sick veterans and service personnel will take place in Asia. The Invictus Games Foundation announced the city of Daejeon as the host on Monday, July 20, beating two other shortlisted contenders, including San Diego, California
The 2029 Games will feature 12 sports and unite around 550 competitors from 26 nations, supported by their family members and friends. It follows the 2027 Games, which will take place in Birmingham, UK.

The international contest for wounded, injured and sick veterans and service people is heading to Korea, it was announced on Monday, July 20.
The upcoming 2029 games will be held in the city of Daejeon, marking the first time the event will have taken place in Asia. It will follow the 2027 games, which are set to take place in Birmingham, U.K.
“Today’s announcement is a defining moment for the Invictus Movement,” Prince Harry said. “We are delighted to announce Daejeon, South Korea as the host of the 2029 Invictus Games and, on behalf of the Invictus Games Foundation, we are so excited to work together.”
Korea beat two other shortlisted contenders, including San Diego, Calif., to be hosts, the Invictus Games Foundation announced.

South Korea feels like an excellent choice for the 2029 Invictus Games. The country has a deep connection to military service, yet disabled veterans can still face stigma and barriers after returning to civilian life. Invictus has the power to challenge those attitudes by placing wounded, injured and sick service personnel at the centre of the story.
The Republic of Korea also appears determined to make the Games a major event rather than treating them as an inconvenience. That matters because the athletes deserve a host country that respects their service and understands the sacrifices made by military families.
South Korea’s security environment may also mean Prince Harry’s protection is treated seriously rather than turned into another political argument. He should be able to attend the Games without fighting the host country for adequate security.
Most of all, it will be wonderful to see Harry and Meghan Sussex supporting the competitors together. The 2029 Games could be a powerful moment for South Korea, the veterans taking part and the wider Invictus community.

“Invictus heads to Asia”, the timing of the announcement shortly after a visit made by the Princess Royal to Korea and Thailand, was interesting and noteworthy.
