There is a particular kind of cognitive dissonance that occurs when a beloved 1990s icon – the woman who taught a generation to reject “no scrubs” – turns up on federal donation records giving money to the political party of scrubs. Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, one-third of TLC, has been quietly bankrolling MAGA Republicans throughout the 2024 election cycle, and the only thing more revealing than the donations themselves is the excuse she has prepared.

No conspiracy needed. The paper trail does the talking. The MeidasNews report lays out the details with the cold precision of a spreadsheet:

FEC records uncovered by MeidasTouch show money being given during the 2024 election cycle to Trump’s PACs, the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) which seeks to keep the GOP in control of Congress, and Senator Ted Cruz of Texas. In total, Chilli’s contributions captured in these filings amount to just under $900, with nearly $800 going to Trump, $63 going to the NRSC, and $7 going to Ted Cruz.

The singer recently drew attention online after screenshots circulated showing that she allegedly reposted a debunked conspiracy about Michelle Obama. According to Eurweb, Chilli reposted an Instagram post that promoted a false claim that the former first lady is transgender and was registered to vote as a man in Illinois in 1994. The post, which no longer appears on Chilli’s page, sparked fan speculation about her political leanings. The original account also shares flat-earth, 9/11, lizard people, weather manipulation, medical, and other conspiracy theories.

Her Online Activity Speaks Clearly, Her Explanation Does Not

On X, Chilli follows Don Jr., MAGA influencer Terrance K. Williams, Fox News personality Tomi Lahren, and pro-Trump network Newsmax. As far as other TLC members go, in 2018, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins joined the progressive organization Health Care Voter, sharing her story about managing Sickle Cell and advocating for protecting the Affordable Care Act. Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes died in a car accident during a 2002 trip to Honduras, where she volunteered at a children’s development center.

That last paragraph does the heavy lifting. While Chilli was curating a follow list that reads like a Fox News staff directory, T-Boz was fighting for healthcare access, and Left Eye died volunteering with children. One of these things is not like the others.

Then came the damage control. TMZ obtained a video statement from Chilli in which she addressed “a few things circulating on the internet that are very concerning” to her. She expressed the “utmost respect and admiration” for Michelle Obama. She claimed she had “no clue” about the repost until friends started calling. She said she accidentally clicked the repost button on Instagram and immediately deleted it.

And then came the excuse that strains credulity past breaking point: any political donations she made were intended to help veterans. According to TMZ:

The singer said she had the “utmost respect and admiration” for Michelle, and that she would never say or do anything “that is disrespectful to her or to any woman.” Chilli said she had “no clue that this repost” had happened until she started to get phone calls from people. She said she immediately went to her page and discovered she accidentally clicked the repost button on Instagram. Chilli said she immediately took down the post after finding it on her profile.

The veteran’s excuse

Chilli wants her fans to believe that it was an accidental repost that somehow also aligned with nearly $900 in donations to Trump, the NRSC, and Ted Cruz? An accidental political awakening that apparently happened entirely by algorithm?

And the veterans? The Department of Veteran Affairs accepts direct donations. The Georgia Veterans Alliance accepts direct donations. The Atlanta Veterans Center accepts direct donations. There are hundreds of non-partisan, non-political organisations in Georgia alone that exist specifically to help veterans without requiring a single cent to pass through Donald Trump’s PACs or Ted Cruz’s campaign coffers.

Donating to Trump to help veterans is like buying a yacht to help the fishing industry. Technically adjacent? No. It is a transparent, post-hoc excuse cooked up by a publicist who hoped no one would check the records. Especially since she is about to go on tour in August with Salt N Pepper.

The woman who sang “Waterfalls” – a song about avoiding dangerous paths and listening to good advice – appears to have taken a very different route. She follows Don Jr., reposts conspiracy content about Michelle Obama, and donates to a man with a long record of racist and sexist remarks. She gave money to a man who once called Jeffrey Epstein a “terrific guy”. She supports a man who was found liable for sexual abuse. A man who tried to overturn an election. And when caught, Chilli really tried to blame her thumb and claim altruism.

Final thoughts

The real tragedy is not that a 90s icon holds conservative views. People may donate to whomever they wish. The insult lies in the cover story. “I accidentally reposted a transphobic conspiracy” and “I donated to Trump to help veterans” cannot both be true, and neither survives scrutiny.

Next time, celebrities should just say that they like Trump. Stand proudly in that MAGA crowd. Do not insult everyone’s intelligence. Because the cover-up, the accidental click, the veteran’s excuse, and the sudden reverence for Michelle Obama are worse than the donation.

But Chilli will not stand proudly, because she cannot. Celebrities who built their careers on popularity fear losing the support and the money from their fans. Especially Black fans, who overwhelmingly make up their base.

So Chilli attempts to cover her tracks. But Black people are not fooled. We have seen this before. We reported how Nicki Minaj lost significant support after aligning with MAGA. It was bad enough when Nicki alienated women by marrying a convicted sex offender. She then chose to rub salt in the self-inflicted wound by becoming Trump’s number one fan. However, Chilli, Tristan Thompson, and Nick Cannon seem to be vying for the top spot in that unfortunate category.
