John Boyega On Star Wars Sequels If He Had Creative Control “We’re Not Getting Rid Of Han Solo Or Luke Skywalker”

John Boyega has never hidden his frustrations with the Star Wars sequel trilogy. During recent fan conventions, the actor behind Finn outlined how he would have reshaped the saga if he had been given the power to produce. His ideas show a deep respect for the legacy characters and a desire to expand the galaxy without sacrificing coherence or lore.

Boyega Calls for a Stronger Role for the Originals

Boyega’s first priority would have been to protect the arcs of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Leia Organa. He argued that their stories deserved proper closure before handing over the narrative to a new generation.

“It would be mad. First of all, we’re not getting rid of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, all these people. We’re not doing that. The first thing we’re going to do is fulfill their story, fulfill their legacy. We’re going to make a good moment of handing on the baton. Luke Skywalker wouldn’t be disappearing on a rock … Hell no. Standing there and he’s, like, a projector? I would want to give those characters way more. Our new characters will not be overpowered in these movies.

They won’t just grab stuff and know what to do with it. No. You’ve got to struggle like every other character in this franchise. I’d look to the Old Republic stories and see what we can add to the continuation of that. I would definitely want to see Force Unleashed stories in there. I would try to expand the Star Wars universe as much as possible while respecting the lore. If we’re expanding the lore, we have to do it within the respective boundaries that stay true.” — Deadline

He rejected the depiction of Luke in The Last Jedi, making clear that the character should never have been reduced to a hermit hiding on a distant rock. Instead, Luke would have remained an active figure in shaping the galaxy’s future. Boyega emphasized the importance of seeing the old heroes honored and then passing the baton in a way that felt earned.

Respecting Lore While Expanding the Galaxy

Beyond the treatment of legacy characters, Boyega imagined a universe that draws from rich material like the Old Republic and Force Unleashed stories. He suggested that future films could expand the galaxy while remaining faithful to its foundations. Expansion, in his view, should always sit within boundaries that protect the integrity of the saga.

He also criticized the way new characters in the sequels were introduced with overwhelming power and little struggle. Boyega stressed that heroes must grow through trial and failure, just as earlier figures in the franchise had done. For him, struggle creates the connection that makes audiences believe in a character’s journey.
